places

When Hogan paints a place the impetus is alway witnessing it in particular light. The scene becomes part of her interior life and the memory of it is as important as the primary experience.

people

Hogan has developed a pioneering approach to portraiture, working alongside an oral historian from National Life Stories, an independent oral history charity based at the British Library. This leaves her free to observe the figure engaged in conversation. During the recording sessions she witnesses the telling of in-depth autobiographical narratives. She observes the connection between spoken testimony and the changing appearance of the narrator, nuances of delivery, alterations in energy, mood, and gesture. Sessions last for two to four hours over a period of many months, sometimes years. Hogan established a research group About Face at the University of the Arts London and co-directed it with professor Charlotte Hodes.

sketchbooks

Hogan's sketchbooks are an archive of ideas, a record of where she has been, what she is thinking about and what matters to her. They are not preparatory studies but a constituent component of her work.
