Current - People

In order to establish a shortlist of potential candidates for my 2010–11 portrait, I asked a number of people from the financial world for advice about potential sitters. The response indicated that there was no obvious direct ‘match’ within today’s banking sector in terms of an individual British founder; not least because the vast financial institutions that now dominate the City are largely foreign-owned. There are fewer heroes in this industry now and also lower levels of deference. In addition, the sheer volume of media coverage of figures in public life perhaps acts to obscure those who, like Francis, are unassuming. Nevertheless, each person I approached did nominate
a candidate.
